It all started in 1998 when a group of visionary Kiwanians decided Bowling Green, KY needed its own piece of the All-American Soap Box Derby magic—and wow, did they deliver. Ever since, kids have been building, racing, and making memories right here in our community. Whether you’re new to the track or a seasoned pit crew parent, this FAQ has everything you need to know to get started. Let’s dive in!
What is the Soap Box Derby?

The Soap Box Derby is a youth racing program where kids build and race gravity-powered cars. It’s been an American tradition since 1934, combining STEM learning, craftsmanship, and good old-fashioned fun. In Bowling Green, we’re proud to host our own local race that’s open to youth ages 7–20.
What events are part of the season?

We’ve got a full season of excitement, including:
  • Build Clinics – Hands-on help with building your car
  • Car Inspections & Impound
  • Race Day
  • Racer Banquet – Held at the National Corvette Museum, where every racer is recognized and awards are presented
What is Inspection and Impound?
#
Before race day, every car goes through inspection to make sure it meets safety and weight requirements. Once it’s approved, it’s "impounded" (stored securely) until race day.  No changes can be made after inspection and impound.
Where does the Bowling Green race take place?

The race happens at Phil Moore Park in Bowling Green, KY—a perfect spot for a day of fun & racing! We’ll share exact details and setup info as race day gets closer, so be sure to follow us on Facebook for the latest updates.
How do we get a car?
#
Don’t have a car? No problem. We have cars available for use on a first-come, first-served basis. You can also purchase your own car.
I'm ready to race, how do I sign up?
#
The registration fee is $55 per racer. We have a limited number of scholarships, ask about them at registration and see if you qualify.  That includes access to Build Clinics, racer swag, and two complimentary tickets to our end-of-season Racer Banquet at the National Corvette Museum. 

Registration is in person:
  • Need to borrow a car? Register  at a Build Clinic.
  • Already have a car? Register during Inspection and Impound.
Don’t forget: A copy of your racer’s birth certificate is required at registration—no exceptions. 

No experience? No problem! First-time racers (and parents) are absolutely welcome. We’ll walk you through everything!
